Egg (Bengali pronunciation: [egg] (listen to this word)) is a round or oval object laid by the female species of different species of animals which is formed by the combination of ovum and outer covering surrounded by a layer of membranes. The main function of the outer covering is to protect the growing embryo inside and the nutrients needed for the fetus. Most yummy eggs, including chicken and turtle eggs, are made with a hard shell or egg shell, albumin (white part), egg yolk and some membranes. All parts of the egg are edible, although the shell is usually omitted. Nutritionally, eggs are an excellent source of protein and choline.

Delicious roe and caviar are fish eggs.
